How Long to Study for HKSI Paper 1

Plan your hours before you enrol. Once you enrol for a Licensing Examination paper, HKSI gives you 90 days to sit it, so the study calendar and the enrolment date have to line up. This guide gives HKSI’s own estimate, what moves it, and three sample schedules.
HKSI’s estimate
HKSI describes the LE as a self-study exam and publishes reference study hours per paper in its Guidelines for Examination Preparation on hksi.org. As checked on 11 October 2026:

Paper 1 is a regulatory paper, so budget 55 to 85 hours. HKSI notes that the figure varies with your work experience and academic background.
What moves you up or down the range
- Nearer 55 hours: you studied law, finance or business, you already work in a licensed firm, or you have sat another regulatory exam recently.
- Nearer 85 hours: you are new to finance, you are studying in your second language, or you can only study in short evening blocks.
- Above 85 hours: a previous attempt failed. Re-sitters often need fewer reading hours but more question practice.
Three sample schedules
Each plan covers all nine syllabus topics (LE Paper 1 syllabus version 35, effective 30 June 2026), ends with timed mocks, and lands at about 70 hours. Adjust the weekly load to your own estimate.
3 weeks: intensive (about 23 hours a week)

Time the enrolment, not just the study
HKSI’s published dates (checked 11 October 2026) say you must schedule a computer-based session that falls within 90 days of your enrolment date, and the scheduling deadline is normally 85 days after enrolment. Miss it and you are marked absent with no refund. If you follow the 8-week plan, enrol around week 3 so your preferred session is still open when you are ready. Details are in how to register.
