LE Paper 1 · Topic 7
This topic tests how a trade actually happens: which HKEX company runs the market, which one clears it, which order type does what, when an order can be cancelled, when a short sale is lawful, and what a futures or options holder must report. Most questions give you a client, an order and a time of day, then ask what the system or the rules do next. Learn the session timetable, the three continuous-trading order types and the reporting thresholds below, and these become quick marks.

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) is the recognised exchange controller under SFO s.59. It owns two recognised exchange companies and four clearing houses. Exchanges match trades; clearing houses step in as central counterparty by novation, so each side faces the clearing house, not the other broker.
| What is traded | Market and trading system | Clearing house and system | Settlement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shares, ETFs, warrants, CBBCs | SEHK, on OTP-C | HKSCC, through CCASS | T+2, Continuous Net Settlement |
| SEHK stock options | SEHK, on HKATS | SEOCH, through DCASS | Premium T+1; shares after exercise T+2 via CCASS |
| HSI, HSCEI, stock and other futures and index options | HKFE, on HKATS | HKCC, through DCASS | Daily variation adjustment; cash or physical at expiry per contract |
| OTC interest rate swaps, NDFs, cross-currency swaps | Not exchange-traded | OTC Clear | Per OTC Clear rules |
An SEHK Exchange Participant must hold a Stock Exchange Trading Right, be a Type 1 licensed corporation and be a Hong Kong company limited by shares (Rule 302). Clearing is a separate HKSCC status: a Direct Clearing Participant clears its own trades; a General Clearing Participant may also clear for non-clearing participants. An HKFE participant may not start trading until it is licensed for Type 2 (HKFE Rule 310).

Trap: naming SEOCH as the clearing house for HSI futures, or calling DCASS a trading system. SEOCH clears SEHK options only; DCASS clears, HKATS trades.
Takeaway: Exchange matches, clearing house guarantees. SEHK and HKSCC for shares; SEHK and SEOCH for stock options; HKFE and HKCC for futures.
The Rules of the Exchange (Rules 501 to 501L) set the day. Morning continuous trading runs 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and afternoon trading 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with no afternoon session on the eves of Christmas, New Year and Lunar New Year.
| Period | Time | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-opening: order input | 9:00-9:15 a.m. | Enter, amend or cancel at-auction and at-auction limit orders (within 15% of the reference price) |
| Pre-opening: no-cancellation | 9:15-9:20 a.m. | Enter new orders within tighter limits; no amendment or cancellation |
| Pre-opening: random matching | 9:20 to no later than 9:22 a.m. | As above; matching happens at a random moment |
| Pre-opening: blocking | To 9:30 a.m. | No input, amendment or cancellation |
| Continuous trading | 9:30-12:00, 1:00-4:00 | Limit, enhanced limit and special limit orders |
| Closing Auction Session | 4:00 p.m. to a random close between 4:08 and 4:10 p.m. | At-auction and at-auction limit orders within 5% of the CAS reference price |
In the auctions, unpriced at-auction orders match first at the final equilibrium price; unmatched at-auction orders are cancelled, while unmatched at-auction limit orders carry into continuous trading as limit orders at their own price.
| Order type | How it matches | Unfilled balance |
|---|---|---|
| Limit order | Only at the input price; a sell cannot be below the best bid, a buy cannot be above the best ask | Queues at the input price |
| Enhanced limit order | Up to 10 price queues, never worse than the input price; input within 10 spreads of the best opposite price | Converted to a limit order at the input price |
| Special limit order | Up to 10 price queues, never worse than the input price; no input-price cap beyond crossing the best price | Cancelled, never stored |
Board lots are set by each issuer. Rule 519 requires board-lot trading except for odd lot and special lot trades, which use a separate odd lot operation and often trade at a discount. Listed structured products may only be traded in board lots (Rule 519A).
Trap: thinking an order can be cancelled until 9:20 a.m., or that a special limit order keeps its unfilled balance. Cancellation ends at 9:15; the special limit balance is cancelled.
Takeaway: Cancel before 9:15. Enhanced keeps the rest; special kills the rest. Closing auction band is 5%, opening band 15%.
