HKSI Paper 7 Exam Guide: Format and Syllabus

Updated · 7 min read

Paper 7, Financial Markets, is the one practical paper in every HKSI industry-qualification pair the SFC recognises. A dealer at a broker, an analyst at a fund house and a junior in corporate finance all pair it with a different second paper. If you need the industry qualification for any activity HKSI examines, you need Paper 7.

It is also the longest practical paper: 60 questions in 1 hour 30 min, against 40 for every other practical paper. The content is economics and markets, with a small but reliable share of arithmetic.

You have 90 seconds a question. Monthly pass rates over those twelve months ranged from 59.47% (Aug 2026) to 87.50% (Nov 2025). HKSI estimates 40 to 70 self-study hours for each practical paper, and wrong answers cost nothing.

Who needs Paper 7

The SFC’s Guidelines on Competence (October 2024) name a recognised industry qualification (RIQ) for each regulated activity. It is the same for representatives and responsible officers:

Regulated activityRIQ
Types 1, 4 and 8 (securities)Papers 7 and 8
Types 2 and 5 (futures)Papers 7 and 9
Type 6 (corporate finance)Papers 7 and 11
Type 9 (asset management)Papers 7 and 12
Type 10 (credit rating services)Papers 7 and 10
Type 13 (depositary services)Papers 7 and 19
Source: SFC Guidelines on Competence (October 2024), paras 4.2.2.1 and 4.3.2.1, checked 13 October 2026. Type 3 uses Vocational Training Council papers; Type 7 has no RIQ.

When you can skip it

The RIQ is one way to show industry knowledge, not the only one. Your academic background and experience decide whether you need it:

Your backgroundRepresentative (para 4.3.1.2)Responsible officer (para 4.2.1.2)
Degree in accounting, business administration, economics, finance or law; any degree with passes in two courses in those fields; or CFA, CIIA or CFPNo RIQNo RIQ
Another degreeNo RIQ with 2 years’ relevant experience over the past 5; otherwise the RIQ or Extra CPTThe RIQ or Extra CPT
HKDSE Level 2 in English or Chinese and in Mathematics, or equivalentExtra CPT with 2 years’ experience over the past 5; otherwise the RIQThe RIQ with 3 years’ experience over the past 6, or Extra CPT with 5 years over the past 8
Source: SFC Guidelines on Competence (October 2024), checked 13 October 2026. Responsible officers also need 3 years’ relevant experience over the past 6 (Options A and B), 2 years’ management experience and the regulatory papers.

“Extra CPT” means five CPT hours for each regulated activity you apply for, a one-off, completed in the six months before you apply. Our guide on the degree rule works through the common cases.

Trap

Sitting Paper 7 when a two-course transcript already covers you. Passes in at least two courses in accounting, business administration, economics, finance or law within any degree count as Option A. Check your transcript before you enrol.

Paper 7 carries over

Because Paper 7 sits in every pair, adding a second activity usually means one new paper, not two. The Guidelines give the example of someone who passed Papers 1 and 7 and was licensed for Type 1 within the past three years: they need not re-take either when they add Type 2 (para 4.1.6). They still need Paper 9 if the RIQ applies to them.

  • Three-year rule: the SFC expects the RIQ to be obtained no more than three years before you apply (para 4.1.5). An older pass can count if you have stayed in the industry with substantial relevant experience (para 4.1.6).
  • Full RIQ exemption: if you are licensed now, or were in the past three years, and apply in the same role for an activity with the same RIQ, such as a Type 1 representative adding Type 4 (para 4.4.2.1).
  • Conditional RIQ exemption: a current licensee with five years’ related local experience over the past eight, adding an activity with a different RIQ in the same role, may be exempted in exceptional circumstances, for example a Type 1 representative adding Type 2 or Type 9. It costs five CPT hours of industry or product knowledge and may come with scope limits (para 4.4.2.2).

The seven syllabus topics

HKSI publishes no weighting per topic. The calculation column lists what the syllabus’s expected learning outcomes ask you to calculate or apply; the other topics are tested as concepts.

Do not over-prepare the maths. By our count, about 7% of the questions in HKSI’s Paper 7 Sample Practice Test are calculations and about a quarter are statement lists (“I, II and III only”) (counted 11 October 2026). The marks are mostly in definitions, market structure and who regulates what in Hong Kong.

Study guide version 3.7 from 9 December 2026

HKSI’s Updating Your Study Guides page lists version 3.7 of the Paper 7 study guide, published October 2026, for examinations from 9 December 2026. Sittings before then use version 3.6. On 13 October 2026, the Paper 7 syllabus linked from HKSI’s LE overview was still the one effective from 1 March 2026.

  • Pick the guide by your sitting date, not your enrolment date.
  • If you sit on or after 9 December 2026, download version 3.7 from the HKSI portal and read the list of major updates HKSI puts at the end of each revised guide.

Our Paper 7 and 8 banks follow HKSI's published syllabus outlines (Paper 7 v3.5 and Paper 8 v3.6, effective 1 March 2026), with law and market facts as at October 2026. HKSI's version 3.7 study guides apply from 9 December 2026; we will recheck both banks against them once HKSI publishes the new outlines.

Trap

Studying from a colleague’s old PDF. Exam questions follow the current study guide, so figures and market structure from an earlier version can turn a right answer into a wrong one. See HKSI study manual versions.

How to prepare

  • Start with Topics 4 and 5. They hold the calculations, and the formulas take practice to become quick.
  • Then Topics 1, 2 and 6, which carry most of the terms. Learn each Hong Kong regulator with what it supervises.
  • Practise by topic on our Paper 7 page, then sit full timed mock exams until you score above 80%.
  • Sit your paired paper soon after: Paper 8 for securities (see Paper 7 vs Paper 8), or Paper 12 for asset management. A Type 9 RO also needs Paper 6 (see the Paper 6 exam guide).
  • You must sit within 90 days of enrolling, so enrol once you are close to ready (see how to register).

Takeaway

Paper 7 is in every RIQ pair. 60 questions, 90 minutes, 42 to pass. Check whether your degree removes it before you enrol.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are in HKSI Paper 7?

Paper 7 (Financial Markets) has 60 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 min, and you need 70% (42 correct) to pass. Every other practical paper has 40 questions (HKSI Institute LE overview, hksi.org, checked 13 October 2026).

What calculations are in HKSI Paper 7?

The syllabus effective 1 March 2026 asks you to apply equity pricing methods, calculate nominal, real and effective interest rates, price zero-coupon and coupon bonds, and calculate cross rates, forward rates and forward premiums or discounts. They are a small share of the paper.

Do I need to retake Paper 7 to add another licence type?

Usually not. Paper 7 is in every HKSI industry-qualification pair. The SFC Guidelines on Competence (October 2024) (para 4.1.6) give the example of a person who passed Papers 1 and 7 and was licensed for Type 1 within three years: they need not re-take them to add Type 2, though they still need Paper 9 if the RIQ applies.

Can experience replace HKSI Paper 7?

For a representative, sometimes. With another degree plus two years' relevant experience over the past five, no RIQ is needed; with HKDSE-level education and that experience, five hours of Extra CPT per activity replaces it (SFC Guidelines on Competence (October 2024), para 4.3.1.2, checked 13 October 2026).
