HKSI Papers 7 and 8 v3.7: What Is Changing
Updated · 5 min read
From 9 December 2026, Paper 7 (Financial Markets) and Paper 8 (Securities) sittings follow HKSI's new version 3.7 study guides. Sittings up to and including 8 December 2026 still follow version 3.6. Your session date decides which one you study, so check it before you plan your revision.
Which version applies to your sitting
| Paper | Sittings up to 8 December 2026 | Sittings from 9 December 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 7, Financial Markets | v3.6 (May 2026) | v3.7 (October 2026) |
| Paper 8, Securities | v3.6 (December 2025) | v3.7 (October 2026) |
The exam format does not change: Paper 7 is 60 questions in 90 minutes and Paper 8 is 40 questions in 60 minutes, with a 70% pass mark for both. What changes is the content the questions are set from.
What HKSI has said about the change
- HKSI lists the major updates from the previous version at the end of each new study guide. As at 17 October 2026 it had not published that list anywhere else, and no new Paper 7 or 8 syllabus outline was on its site.
- Enrolled candidates download the guide for their paper free, until their exam date.
- Unless HKSI says otherwise, exam questions follow the latest current version of the study guide. So for a sitting on or after 9 December 2026, version 3.7 is the one that counts.
Be careful with anything that claims to list the v3.7 changes
Hong Kong changes since the v3.6 guides worth rechecking
Study guides catch up with the market. Rules and market facts that have changed since the version 3.6 guides were written are the likeliest places for the new guides to differ. We rechecked our Paper 7 and 8 material against these on 17 October 2026:
| Area | What changed | Papers |
|---|---|---|
| Hang Seng Index | 95 constituents from 7 September 2026 | 7, 8 |
| Hang Seng TECH Index | Moves to 50 constituents at the December 2026 rebalancing | 8 |
| Board lots | HKEX's board lot framework: a lot value floor of HK$1,000 and a ceiling of HK$50,000 | 8 |
| Minimum spreads | HKEX's Phase 2 reduction of minimum spreads | 7, 8 |
| Weighted voting rights | Listing Rule changes to WVR thresholds and confidential filing, 24 July 2026 | 7 |
| Chapter 15A | Issue price changes for structured products from 1 May 2026 | 8 |
| Settlement cycle | T+1 consulted on in April 2026, no start date set | 7, 8 |
| Unified securities market | Announced to start on 16 November 2026 | 8 |
A change that is announced but not yet in force when a guide is written usually stays out of the exam until a later guide covers it. If your copy of version 3.7 does not mention one of these, follow the guide for the exam and the current rule at work.
How to switch without losing your revision
- Read the “major updates” list at the end of the v3.7 guide first.
- Mark the chapters it names. Most of your existing notes still stand; re-read only what moved.
- Update every figure you have memorised for those chapters: index counts, lot sizes, spreads, dates.
- Re-download the guide after any reschedule that moves your sitting across 9 December 2026.
Worked example
You sit Paper 8 on 3 December 2026: study version 3.6. You reschedule to 15 December 2026: switch to version 3.7 and read its updates list before your next session.
Where our Paper 7 and 8 banks stand
Our Paper 7 and 8 banks follow HKSI's published syllabus outlines (Paper 7 v3.5 and Paper 8 v3.6, effective 1 March 2026), with law and market facts as at October 2026, rechecked on 17 October 2026 for changes in force by 9 December 2026. HKSI's version 3.7 study guides apply from 9 December 2026; HKSI lists their changes only inside the guides, so we will recheck both banks against that list.
Our questions are our own practice questions, written from the syllabus and primary sources such as HKEX, the SFC and the HKMA. They are not past or actual exam questions. Until we have checked both banks against HKSI's own list of v3.7changes, we don't describe them as updated for v3.7. Practise on the Paper 7 and Paper 8 pages, compare the two in Paper 7 vs Paper 8, and see every paper's version in HKSI study manual versions.
