HKSI Paper 1 Past Papers and Sample Tests
Updated · 5 min read
Most candidates search for Paper 1 past papers before they open the study guide. What HKSI actually publishes is narrower than the search results suggest, and the gap is filled by PDFs of unknown age and origin. This guide sets out what is official and free, what is not, and how to use each.
What HKSI publishes
HKSI Institute lists its LE study resources on hksi.org, on the Licensing Examination overview and Sample Practice Tests pages. As checked on 11 October 2026:
| Resource | Papers | Cost and access |
|---|---|---|
| Sample Practice Test (paper-based) | 1, 2 and 5 to 12 | Free download |
| Sample practice questions (computer-based) | 18 and 19 | Free to candidates enrolled for that paper, via the Online Portal or app, for up to 90 days |
| Examination System Simulator | All LE papers (the system is in English) | Free, no enrolment needed |
| eStudy Guide | Every LE paper | Free on enrolment until your exam date, or HK$200 (members) / HK$400 (non-members) per copy |
| Online practice questions | 1, 7 and 8 | Optional, fee-charging HKSI product |
There is no past-paper download or past-paper product on those pages. The Paper 1 Sample Practice Test is the closest thing to one. Its own disclaimer says its questions are not actual LE questions and that HKSI gives no warranty that they are up to date. The copy on hksi.org on 11 October 2026 carries a 2023 copyright date, which is before the current Paper 1 syllabus (version 35, effective 30 June 2026) and study guide (version 3.5, April 2026).
Use the sample test for what it does well: the question styles. LE papers mix single-answer questions with I-to-IV combination questions, and Paper 1 gives you 60 of them in 1 hour 30 min. Use the simulator to learn the computer-based exam screen before exam day. Check any figure in the sample test against the current study guide.
Third-party past paper PDFs
HKSI states on its LE pages that it has not authorised any third party to offer LE revision tools or study support resources, and that it is not responsible for loss caused by them (hksi.org, checked 11 October 2026). So a file labelled “HKSI Paper 1 past paper” on a forum, a file-sharing site or a marketplace is not official, whoever made it. Older documents titled “Past Questions and Answers” also circulate; they are not on HKSI’s current LE pages.
Two problems follow.
- They go stale. HKSI says that, unless it specifies otherwise, exam questions are based solely on the latest current version of the study guide. A PDF built on an older guide can teach a figure, a fee or a rule that the exam no longer accepts.
- They may be copied or recalled. HKSI’s LE page warns that examination misconduct, including unauthorised access to examination questions, may lead to disqualification, suspension from future examinations and notification to the relevant regulators. A bank of questions memorised by past candidates is exactly that risk.
The second point reaches beyond the exam. When the SFC decides whether you are fit and proper to be licensed, the SFO directs it to consider your ability to act honestly and fairly and your reputation and character (Cap. 571, s.129). A misconduct finding reported by HKSI is not something you want in that file.

What our questions are
HKSI Prep questions are original practice questions. We write them to the public LE Paper 1 syllabus and check each one against primary sources such as the SFO, the SFC codes and HKEX rules; every explanation names its source and as-at date. They are not HKSI questions, past papers or recalled exam questions, and we do not copy HKSI’s sample tests or study guide.
- Free mock exam: a timed Paper 1 mock you can start without signing up.
- Sample questions: a short set with worked answers, to see the difficulty.
- Free questions by topic: single questions with the rule, its source and the common mistake.
A sensible order
- Week 1: open HKSI’s Examination System Simulator once so the interface holds no surprises.
- Early on: sit HKSI’s Paper 1 Sample Practice Test untimed, to see the question styles.
- Each study week: answer questions on the topic you just read, and log every miss.
- Final two weeks: full timed mocks until you clear 80% twice.
For the study method, read how to pass Paper 1. For the study guide versions in force, read HKSI study manual versions.

HKSI Prep is an independent study tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by HKSI Institute or the SFC. Check HKSI’s current study resources on hksi.org.
Frequently asked questions
Does HKSI publish Paper 1 past papers?
No. HKSI's Licensing Examination pages offer a Paper 1 Sample Practice Test, an Examination System Simulator and the eStudy Guide, but no past papers to download or buy (hksi.org, checked 11 October 2026).
Is the HKSI sample practice test free?
Yes. Paper-based Sample Practice Tests for Papers 1, 2 and 5 to 12 are free downloads. The computer-based sample questions for Papers 18 and 19 are open only to candidates enrolled for those papers (hksi.org, checked 11 October 2026).
Are HKSI past paper PDFs online genuine?
Not as official material. HKSI states it has not authorised any third party to offer LE revision tools or study support resources, so a PDF sold or shared as a past paper did not come from HKSI with its approval (hksi.org, checked 11 October 2026).
Are your practice questions real HKSI exam questions?
No. They are original practice questions we write to the public LE Paper 1 syllabus and check against the SFO, SFC codes and other primary sources. They are not past, recalled or official HKSI questions.
